The Gaia Association in Ethiopia has successfully completed its research phase, and is now wokring with the UNCHR to distribute stoves to Somali refugees—refugees who previously gathered firewood in fear and suffered ill-health from smoke. Several thousand stoves have already been distributed. Local production and commercial sales of locally-manufactered stoves to low-income groups are about to start in Addis Ababa.

Nigeria is the sixth largest oil producer worldwide. Production is concentrated in the Niger Delta, where huge flares usable for alcohol production are currently wasted. Following two successful pilot projects by Project Gaia (through the Center for Household Energy and Environment), the Delta State government is working with HydroChem of Linde AG on developing a gas-to-methanol plant to capture this energy.
