Project Gaia mission statement

Project Gaia, Inc. is part of a global initiative for the development of clean-cooking fuels. It seeks to establish and promote the use of alcohol fuels for household energy for all who have limited access to clean energy, including disadvantaged and marginalized peoples who suffer the added burden of being energy poor.

Ethanol and methanol (the simple alcohols) are outstanding fuels that enable families to meet their daily household requirements for cooking, lighting, heating and refrigeration cleanly and safely. Whether renewably sourced, or sourced from currently wasted resources, they can supplant traditional solid fuels and hydrocarbon or petroleum fuels cost-effectively. Because they can be locally manufactured and commercialized on a small or large scale, they create the opportunity for local secure ownership of energy systems, from production to end-use.

Project Gaia wants to improve lives by developing technology that will allow marginalized families to meet their energy needs.
You can help us help others.

Project Gaia seeks to:
• raise awareness of the safety, health, economic and environmental benefits of alcohol fuels,
• share insights and resources with government and private organizations, whether business or non-profit, working in related endeavors,
• initiate or assist with demonstration projects that show the viability of alcohol as a household fuel,
• build on this experience to encourage locally managed commercialization of alcohol fuels and appliances,
• reduce carbon emissions, and thereby facilitate access to carbon finance to support low-income communities.

Through these activities, Project Gaia will:
• address economic, social, environmental, health and natural resource management concerns associated with non-sustainable biomass use and reliance on petroleum fuels including kerosene,
• displace the indiscriminate use of charcoal, wood, dung and traditional low- grade biomass fuels,
• create robust markets for locally produced alcohol,
• help to stimulate both rural and urban economies through local job creation and enterprise,
• contribute to achieving the Millennium Development Goals.
